DR COPPELIUS has made a life-size dancing doll, so lifelike, young Franz becomes obsessed with it, abandoning his girlfriend, Swanhilda. Can Swanhilda save Franz from his own folly, and from the evil designs of the dastardly doctor?
This is the classic ballet Coppélia, which Ballet Ireland is bringing to the Town Hall Theatre on Wednesday December 9 at 8pm.
In this imaginative new production, choreographer Morgann Runacre-Temple and librettist Stella Feehily have transferred Coppélia from its original setting in the 1870s, when it was first performed, to the 1950s, with added elements inspired by Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks and X Factor. It also features a new version of Léo Delibes’ classic score, by Tom Lane.
The cast is Duncan Anderson, Clare Basset, Richard Bermange, Emanuele Del Celo, Celine Le Grelle, James Löffler, Maria Ledesma, Anthony Maloney, Laurine Muccioli, and Kesi Olley-Dorey. Set design is by Lorna Ritchie and costume design is by Sarah Mae White.
Morgann Runacre-Temple has been creating work for Ballet Ireland since 2005, making nine works for the company, including four full-length ballets. She has also created works for The Curve Foundation Dance Company, Ballet Central, The London Children’s Ballet, The Print Room, and Royal Ballet Education. Stella Feehily has written plays for The Royal Court and Out of Joint Theatre Company and has performed at The Gate, The Abbey Theatre and Project Arts Centre and in Fair City and Ballykissangel.
