Galway cyclists welcome resurfacing of Eglinton Canal path

The Galway Cycling Campaign has welcomed the recent resurfacing of the path along the Eglinton Canal, which is a very popular spot for the city’s cyclists.

GCC spokesperson Shane Foran said the new surface is of a bright colour which reflects the streetlights at night; enhances the visibility of pedestrians and cyclists using it; and should help reduce the likelihood of collisions and falls as a result of obstacles and surface imperfections.

The GCC has thanked the Galway City Council, the Lough Corrib Navigation Trustees, and all involved in the resurfacing.

“This is a very popular route among pedestrians and cyclists – including many students, since it leads directly to the university entrance on University Road,” he said.

However Mr Foran reminded cyclists that the canal route is a “shared facility” and that cyclists must be considerate at all times to pedestrians using the same space.
