A NEW work by the English composer Philip Stopford, 'I Sing Of A Maiden', will receive its world premiere in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Wednesday November 25 at 8pm.
The work will be performed by the Tribal Chamber Choir, directed by Mark Keane. The choir commissioned Stopford to set the text of 'I Sing Of A Maiden' for double chorus. Stopford’s compositions appeared in the Classic FM Hall of Fame in 2014 and he has held music posts in Ireland including as director of music at St Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast.
The concert, entitled Spezzati, an Italian term meaning 'spaced' and often used to describe a form of Renaissance composition, will also feature a performance of Rheinberger’s Mass in Eb of 1878, a miniature vocal symphony; as well as short pieces by Britten, Biebl, and Tavener. These last pieces will be performed in different sections - front and back, semi-choruses at a distance, and performance - to take full advantage of the church's acoustics.
Tickets are €15/€10 and available from choir members or at the door on the night. For further information visit www.tribalgalway.com
