Public lecture on when pirates ruled the seas

The pirates of the late 1600s, early 1700s, conjures images of bloodthirsty bandits and violent criminals, but in some respects their outlook and ethos was an early form of the most ruthless kind of capitalism.

Whether with the cutlass or the fountain pen, people have driven by the imperatives of profit and domination, and this aspect of the ‘Golden Age of Piracy’ as the period of 1650 to 1730 is known, will be examined in Pirates; Entrepreneurs of the High Seas, a public lecture by the Renmore History Society.

The talk will be given in Renmore Barracks at 8pm on Thursday November 19 and it will also look at the era of the English privateers at the end of the 16th century, the suppression of piracy, and the legendary, yet very real, figures of Henry Morgan, Blackbeard, Calico Jack, and Captain Kidd.

Places are limited and must be booked in advance through eventbrite.ie  The talk is free for members and €5 for non-members.
