Huge weekend for Maigh Cuilinn GAA clubs

There is a massive weekend of action for the Maigh Cuilinn hurling and football clubs this Saturday and Sunday, as both teams are in championship action in the space of twenty-four hours.

The Moycullen Intermediate hurlers will face Abbeyknockmoy in the county Intermediate final this Saturday (2pm ) in Kenny Park, while the footballers take on Michael Glaveys (Roscommon ) in Hyde Park on Sunday (3pm ) in the Connacht Intermediate championship.

The hurlers had a very good win last weekend over Ahascragh/Fohenagh in the county semi-final, coming through on a score-line of 1-15 to 1-10, with Mark Lydon a real commanding presence at centre-back.

Abbeyknockmoy qualified for the final courtesy of a solid 1-13 to 1-10 victory over Kinvara and there should be little between the sides on Saturday.

Both sides have already guaranteed themselves senior hurling for 2016.

The Moycullen footballers with about a dozen dual players on their panel have already secured senior status for next season as a result of winning the Galway Intermediate championship and they are now hoping to have a run in the provincial series.

They face the Roscommon champions in Hyde Park on Sunday.

With four or five of the starting team in action on Saturday, as well as Sunday, they will face a tough battle in the Hyde.

Michael Glaveys have had a remarkable two seasons as they were playing Junior club football in 2014, but have secured promotion from Junior, to Intermediate to senior football, in 24 months which is fantastic progress.

They are a very young side  and their key players are the likes of Andrew Glennon at  full-forward, Conor Hussey, Stephen Comer and Roscommon goalkeeper Darren O’ Malley who plays outfield for his club.

It has been a good year for the Maigh Cuilinn GAA clubs already, with both hurlers and footballers being promoted to the senior ranks for 2016, however, the icing on the cake would be another adult county title and that is the target the hurlers have for Saturday, although Abbeyknockmoy will provide particularly tough opposition.

The Moycullen ladies footballers showed their male brethren the way last weekend when winning the Connacht Junior Ladies Club Final, beating Padraig Pearses by 6-14 to 1-7.
