Be inspired by Múscailt exhibitions

MASSIVE INSTALLATIONS, metal sculptures, photographs of death, and student artists reacting to the recession - these are the exhibitions that will make up Múscailt.

Múscailt, NUI, Galway’s arts festival, takes place from February 9 to 13 and the following exhibitions can be seen during that time.

Versus is a life sized art installation by Ben Geoghegan and commissioned by NUI Galway, which is situated in the college green. It poses the question of arts v leisure. The goalposts face each other, perhaps inviting you to a game? Which would you chose: to view the installation as art or be a part of it?

Sue Fox, lecturer in photography at Manchester Metropolitan University, will present an illustrated talk Contemplations on the Corpse at the Bank of Ireland Theatre, on Tuesday at 6pm. Fox is an artist best known for her exhibition Post-Mortem, in which she photographed the dead in mortuaries, funeral parlours, and crematoria.

Metal artist, Luca Ciavarella will be inspired by salvaged/reclaimed pieces, creating an art sculpture in the tennis court throughout the course the festival. His piece, Living Sculpture, will be auctioned at The Gala Ball in March in aid of Habitat for Humanity. Luca will also give a talk on his piece on Friday February 13 at 3pm in the tennis courts.

Leanaí I Limbo by Lorraine Tuck, a haunting photo exhibition depicting the final resting places of unbaptised stillborn babies in Connemara, can be seen in the NUIG gallery throughout Múscailt.

On Monday at 6pm, the artist Jim Fitzpatrick will open the Mise Era exhibition by ArtSoc in the Áras na MacLéinn hall. In this exhibition, ArtSoc, through an adaptation of Pádraig Pearse’s poem Mise Éire, reacts to the recession and asks if Irish artistic expression has a place in such a world.
