Galway lifts Munster Cup

Galway tennis players have won the Munster Summer Cup for the first time in nearly four decades.

The Galway Lawn Tennis Club team of Alec Sandys, Cormac O’Connor, Jane and Anne Marie Quirke won the Munster Summer Cup, grade 2 at Rushbrook in Cobh.

They beat St  Anne’s, Waterford, 3-0 in the final, having travelled to and overcome Douglas Lawn Tennis Club (Cork ), Limerick Lawn Tennis Club, and Castleview Lawn Tennis Club (Carrick-on-Suir ) in the course of the summer.

In an effort to get more competitive play the tennis committee in Galway had requested permission from the Munster Council in 1976 to play in the Munster and Riordan Cups. In only their second year competing, GLTC took the two premier Munster inter-cup competitions out of the province for the first time and neither has not returned until  now.
