Thornton just shy of Olympic time

Gary Thornton of Galway City Harriers ran a superb personal best time of two hours 17 minutes 19 seconds in the  Berlin Marathon on Sunday.

However this tremendous effort in his attempt to make the Olympic Games marathon standard came up just short.

On pace the whole way until the last four miles, it was an agonising for him to ultimately miss the time needed by just 19 seconds.

Thornton, however, still has time to make the qualification for next summer's Oympic Games in Rio, with the window open until next May.

Some 2,000 runners and sportspeople from all codes took part on what was a great day for the club.  Unfortunately the record attempt fell  short of what was needed, but nevertheless the attempt raised  proceeds  towards the club's major new facility development fund for its grounds in Craughwell near the National School.
