According to research, first impressions are formed within 17 seconds of meeting someone. This year’s GMIT Graduate Careers Fair, taking place on Monday October 5, will feature a new event called Dressing for Success, which aims to help graduates make the best possible first impression during those vital seconds.
Dressing for Success is for final year students and aims to give them confidence and encouragement during job interviews and networking events. Local clothing stores Hanley & Co Menswear and Fusion Fashion are sponsoring the event, which will include a brief fashion show presented by GMIT students.
The 80 organisations signed up for the careers fair represent sectors such as business, finance, IT, hospitality, retail, and construction. These include Intel, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Medtronic, Jameson, Boston Scientific, SAP, Musgrave Group, Grant Thornton, EY, Ericsson, Cisco, and many more.
A number of third-level colleges will have stands at the fair, providing information on postgraduate studies both in Ireland and abroad. GMIT’s career office will also host CV clinics and presentations on interview techniques. Following the success of its visit to the fair last year, Valeo Vision Systems is again bringing a test vehicle to the college so that students will see innovative technology in action.
Bridie Killoran, GMIT careers officer, said: “This year we have seen an increase in the number of business and accounting companies wanting to meet our students. Overall there is an increase in the number of organisations seeking to be part of the event. Our students are delighted to have these opportunities to meet prospective employers, and to learn from them and from career workshops. They are particularly looking forward to the Dressing for Success event. With so many changing styles and cultural influences it’s not always easy to get it right, and this event aims to point our students and graduates in the right direction.”
The GMIT Graduate Careers Fair takes place in GMIT Galway (new building ) on Monday October 5 from 12 noon to 3pm. For more information, contact [email protected] or phone 091 742778.
