Eamon Ceannt festival among 2016 events for Galway

A week-long festival commemorating the life of Eamon Ceannt, the only Galway-born leader of the Easter Rising, will be among a series of events taking place in Galway next year to mark the centenary of 1916.

A programme of events adopted by Galway City Council this week includes a time capsule, a blog featuring contemporaneous news reports from 1916, exhibitions, seminars, and a digital map of Galway locations associated with the Rising.

Eamon Ceannt will be remembered with a festival in June of next year, with events to commemorate the man as a signatory of the 1916 Proclamation, a talented piper, and a founder of Na Piobairí Uilleann. The festival, organised in association with The Galway Sessions, will include a seminar, exhibitions, outdoor concerts, and a pipe parade featuring leading uileann and bagpipers from Ireland, Scotland, and the USA.

Gary McMahon, senior executive officer for arts, culture, and communications at Galway City Council, told the council this week that the programme arose out of an open workshop with heritage, arts, civic and community groups to discuss ideas for events and projects .
