Galwegians urged to attend free eye testing for AMD Awareness Week

As part of Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD ) Awareness Week 2015, which takes place from September 14 to 20, - a mobile eye testing unit will be in two Galway locations next Wednesday, September 16, where people can avail if a free test for AMD, a common, preventable eye disease that can cause blindness.

The dedicated Novartis testing unit will be travelling around the country raising awareness of this potentially devastating eye disease and highlighting the ease and importance of having your eyes checked. Next Wednesday the testing unit will be at Ballybane Library, Castlepark Road, Ballybane, from 10am to 1pm, and at Galway Golf Club, Blackrock, Salthill, from 2pm to 6pm.

Hundreds of people in Galway have availed of free eye testing during AMD Awareness Week since it began in 2008.

This year’s event focuses on ‘your defining moment’, supported by Fighting Blindness, NCBI, the Irish College of Ophthalmologists, the Association of Optometrists Ireland, and Novartis.

AMD is the leading cause of blindness for people over the age of 50 in Ireland, despite being preventable. The main symptoms of AMD are distortion and blurred central vision. The earlier the disease is detected, the better the outcome for those with AMD as it can be treated effectively.
