Bernie Keogh and Cathy Hughes joint exhibition

BERNIE KEOGH and Cathy Hughes have been friends for a long time. They were also born and reared in the west of Ireland. Both are also artists, and to mark it all, they are holding a joint exhibition.

The exhibition, entitled Belonging, opens at the NUI Galway gallery in the Quadrangle on Friday September 18 at 6pm. The guest speaker is James Harrold, the city arts officer.

Cathy Hughes was reared in Westport and later spent time in the Aran Islands absorbing the local culture and working in the family craft shop. The colours of the landscapes, the maritime environment, and the imagery of Celtic mythology form a significant presence in her art, with contemporary works evolving towards a more abstract style.

Bernie Keogh is well-known as both an artist and art teacher. Her works in this exhibition focus on family, friends, places, couples together in old age; girls wearing Galway shawls, boating and swans, andimages relating to the history of Galway.

Belonging runs September 26. Gallery opening hours are 11am to 4pm daily (closed Sundays and Mondays ). Admission is free. See www.galwayart.ie and www.berniekeogh.ie
