Autumn poetry workshops at the Galway Arts Centre

This September, Galway Arts Centre is offering aspiring poets a choice of three poetry workshops facilitated by renowned poet Kevin Higgins.

Each week Higgins will give participants a poetry writing exercise for the following week, when he will offer suggestions as to how to make it the best poem it can be. Higgins is an experienced workshop facilitator and several of his students have gone on to achieve publication success.

One of his workshop participants at Galway Arts Centre won the prestigious Hennessy Award for New Irish Poetry, two have won the Cúirt New Writing Prize, and another the Cúirt Poetry Grand Slam. Several others have published collections of their poems, with two being shortlisted for the Shine-Strong Award for Best First Collection.

Each workshop will run for 10 weeks, commencing the week of September 21. They will take place on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 8.30pm starting on September 22; on Thursday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm starting on September 24; and on Friday afternoons from 2pm to 3.30pm starting on September 25.

The Tuesday evening and Friday afternoon workshops are open to beginners and experienced writers. The Thursday afternoon session is an advanced poetry workshop, suitable for those who have participated in poetry workshops before or had poems published.

The cost to participants is €110 with an €100 concession rate. Places must be paid for in advance. To reserve a place contact Galway Arts Centre on 091 565886 or email [email protected].
