Orpheus - Elizabethan style

Sharon Carty and VUENV in concert in Galway Cathedral

THE MYTH of Orpheus, retold through the songs and instrumental music of Elizabethan and Jacobean England, is the stuff of Orfea Britannica, a concert in the Galway Cathedral on Thursday August 6 at 8pm.

Orfea Britannica will be performed by Irish mezzosoprano Sharon Carty and the Austrian-German recorder consort VUENV - Siegrun Geister, Barbara Sackl, Silke Gwendolyn Schulze, Karin Silldorff-Jenner, and Solomiya Maksimiv - and the performance will include pieces by John Downland, Nathaniel Giles, Christopher Tye, and Alfonso Ferrabosco, among others. This project has also been recorded on CD by the ensemble, and will be available at the concert.

Sharon Carty was a member of the Opera Studio at Frankfurt Opera House from 2010-2012. She has since enjoyed success on stage and the concert platform. Her most recent performances were in Der Rosenkavalier at Oper Frankfurt and Orlando at Theater Freiburg. She has performed with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, RTÉ NSO, Capella Istrapolitana, Wiener Akademie, and Capella Leopoldina. VUENV was founded in 2007 by five recorder players from Graz, Bremen, and Basel and plays music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Admission is €15/10. See www.recitals.galwaycathedral.ie
