MARTIN O'MEARA was a WWI hero, winning the Victoria Cross for his bravery in battle in France with the Australian Forces, but after the war his life deteriorated. Now his story is being told in Under Any Old Gumtree.
Written and directed by Cork-born Noel O’Neill, and featuring actors Kieran Garvey and Rex Gray, Under Any Old Gumtree makes its Irish premiere at Galway Fringe Festival in the Mechanics Institute, Middle Street, this evening at 7pm, continuing tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday.
The play has been performed in Australia, winning Best Actor and the People’s Choice Award at the 2014 Western Australia State Drama Festival. It has also enjoyed critical praise. The Perth Theatre Review described it as “powerful, moving, insightful, occasionally funny….a blistering exploration of the devastation of the Great War”.
Admission is €10. See www.galwayfringe.ie For more information about Martin O'Meara see martinomeara.weebly.com/about-martin html.
