DR FEELGOOD'S Wilko Johnson, gospel music, and the LA venue where The Doors and Mötley Crüe played their early gigs, are the subjects of major documentaries at the Galway Film Fleadh.
English director Julien Temple has made some of the most memorable music films of the last 30 years, including The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle (1980 ), Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten (2007 ), and Oil City Confidential (2009 ). The latter was about proto-punk r'n'b band Dr Feelgood.
Temple returns to Dr Feelgood with a documetnary on their iconic guitarist Wilko Johnson. Diagnosed with a terminal illness in 2013, he set out on a farewell tour. Today he is cancer free and in great health. His remarkable story is told in The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson (Saturday, midnight, Cinemobile ).
Other highlights include A Shot of Whisky (Saturday, 2.30pm, Cinemobile ), the incredible story of the legendary Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles, where acts like Frank Zappa, Love, The Doors, Buffalo Springfield, Mötley Crüe, cut their teeth; The Jones Family Will Make A Way (tomorrow, Town Hall Studio, 7.30pm ), sees Bishop Fred Jones take his family’s musical ministry outside the church and unexpectedly connecting with the oddest of allies.
