The Priests to perform in Galway Cathedral

Classical clerical trio's concert to help mark Galway Cathedral jubilee celebrations.

THE PRIESTS, the classical music vocal trio of Roman Catholic priests from Northern Ireland, will perform a concert in the Galway Cathedral to mark the cathedral's jubilee celebrations.

The cathedral - officially known as The Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas - was built in 1958 on the grounds of the old Galway Gaol and was dedicated in 1965, and The Priests concert on Sunday August 16 at 8pm, will be the highlight of events to mark this anniversary.

The platinum selling group have been singing together since they were students boarding at St MacNissi's College, Garron Tower, County Antrim, in the 1970s. After signing a deal with Sony BMG in 2008, their self entitled album, The Priests, was recorded in Ireland and Rome, including the unusual honour of having been allowed to record in St Peter's Basilica, in The Vatican. That debut has led to worldwide success, three albums, a book about their lives, and sales of 3.5 million records worldwide.

“We are delighted to have The Priests perform," said Fr Martin Whelan of Galway Cathedral. "This is a big year for us as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our cathedral. Having such wonderful artists sing imakes this jubilee year extra special. We hope the people of Galway will enjoy this event and be part of our celebrations.”

Concert goers must be seated by 7.45pm for the 8pm start. Tickets are €25 for the main nave and €15 for side and back naves and are available now at the cathedral book shop and parish office.
