Tommy Holohan will stand for the Anti-Austerity Alliance in Galway West at Election 2016. The Claddagh man was selected by a majority of delegates at the recent AAA Galway selection convention.
The AAA, which is allied to The Socialist Party, is running on a platform of opposition to continued cuts and austerity; to promote equal rights for minorities; repeal of the eight amendment of the Constitution which prohibits abortion; and for a social housing building plan and rent controls.
Speaking afterwards, Mr Holohan questioned Government claims about an upturn in the economy. "What little recovery there is for low and middle income people is built on the back of severe exploitation in the form of JobsBridge type scams and low paid precarious work with little or no real job security," he said.
Mr Holohan said the "so called recovery" is about rebuilding "the same house of cards that led to the economic crisis", where the bankers, bondholders and corporate elites "continue to reap massive profits while the rest of us continue to pay for their mistakes".
