Healthcare workers plagued by nuisance caller

A Connemara man was ordered to refrain from making any further nuisance phone calls or sending menacing messages after nine complaints from health care workers were brought against him.

Padraig Conroy (25 ) with an address at Lehenagh, Cashel, Connemara, appeared at Galway District Court this week charged with nuisance calls which were indecent, obscene, or menacing to eight women and one man.

The calls were made on various dates between December 2007 and October 2008 to health care workers at: Coral Haven Nursing Home, Headford Road; 25 Newcastle Road; Merlin Park Hospital, Dublin Road; Dr Stevens Hospital, Steven’s Lane, Dublin; and Oak House, Kildare.

Conroy is already on bail for making similar menacing calls or threats to staff at the Galway Rape Crisis Centre. The court heard last December how the defendant had threatened to break every window at the centre and burn it down. The matter was adjourned to February 3 for the preparation of a psychiatric report.

In court last Monday Judge Mary Fahy said that she had considered gardai’s request to confiscate the defendant’s phone but decided against such measures as he had to realise that the phone was not to be used for unlawful purposes.

Conroy was further remanded on continuing bail on his own bond of €500 to appear in court again on March 2, 2009. The conditions of bail included that he be of good behaviour, that he reside at his parents’ home in Cashel, and that he not make contact with the complainants by any means of communication. Liberty was also granted to re-enter the case if any of the conditions are breached.
