Five km series continues to draw big turnout

John Greaney and Regina Casey, both Galway City Harriers, were the winners of the third race of the 5km series in Craughwell.

Greaney was a clear winner, crossing the tape in a fast 16.07, followed by Craughwell's Damien Larkin in second in 16.54, and Lyall Guiney from Athenry AC in third place in 17.17. 

Regina Casey completed the fast course in 17.30, followed by Athenry's Jane Ann Healy in 18.02 and Galway's Barbara Dunne in third place with 18.15.

The race attracted another turnout of some 700 runners over a fast Craughwell circuit. The fourth series was to be held in Claregalway, and next Tuesday it is the turn of Galway, with the Galway airport chosen as the venue.

 National Track and Field League 

Galway will have two teams competing in the National Track and Field League, with round one taking place on Sunday in Templemore, Co Tipperary. Galway County women’s team and Galway City Harriers men’s teams will compete in the premier division. Both teams boast top athletics talents, including Sean Breathnach, Laura Shaughnessy and Caitriona Farrell.  The top eight teams after the two rounds make the final. 

Mayfly 10k

The Mayfly 10km takes place on Sunday next in Oughterard at 1.30pm. The course is a challenging one, but one that takes in the views along the shores of Lough Corrib.

Starting in the heart of Oughterard village the race continues out the scenic Glann Road and along the lakeside on the high road and back to the finish in the village.

All profits from the event will go towards developing a fitness and recreation park for the Oughterard Community. Race HQ is the Boat Inn in Oughterard.
