DANCING AT Lughnasa, Brian Friel's most famous play, and one of his greatest, will be staged in An Taibhdhearc, by the Knocknacarra Amateur Theatre Society from Wednesday May 20 to Saturday 23 at 8pm.
In Dancing at Lughnasa, Michael Evans looks back, with bittersweet nostalgia, on the lives of his mother and her four sisters in small town Donegal in 1936, the year his uncle, missionary brother Father Jack, returned from Africa, and there was a visit from Michael’s estranged father. The play is a beautifully wrought portrait of rural Irish life as the five Mundy sisters deal with the conflict between happiness and propriety, joy and duty, nature and Christianity, against the backdrop of the Lughnasa harvest festival.
KATS was founded in 1997 when the late Paddy Henry distributed a poster asking, 'Would you like to fill your evenings with fantasy and fun?' He envisioned a society that would be a meeting point for local talent in Knocknacarra and under his guidance the society developed into a vibrant group of volunteers who believed in producing entertaining amateur drama.
Since it has performed You Can’t Take it With You, The Rising of the Moon, Riders to the Sea, Son of Man, See How They Run, Harvey, and Lend Me a Tenor, as well as Rashomon, directed by Paddy Henry, which won the 2003 All Ireland Theatre Festival. KATS also staged the Agatha Christie murder mysteries The Unexpected Guest, And Then There Were None, and Go Back For Murder.
