Greens hope they have a trump in Towers

Speculation is mounting that the Rector of St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church Rev Patrick Towers will stand for election to the Galway County Council in June’s Local Elections.

Green Party sources are confident that Rev Towers will agree to be the party’s candidate in either the Tuam or Ballinasloe wards. The flamboyant Londoner will retire as rector on Sunday and be moving with his wife to north Galway.

Rev Towers admits he is “very much warming to the principle of doing something in the political area” but he will make no decisions yet as to his future intentions. He said it is not something he can give proper consideration while he completes his duties at St Nicholas’.

“I have not made any decision yet as at the moment I am finishing up businesses at the collegiate church,” he told the Galway Advertiser. “I hope to be able to give attention to the next phase of my life come February 1.”
