Dutch masters to indulge in some wind wizardry

“HERE ARE five souls playing as one. These are masters!” So declared Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf about the Amsterdam based Calefax Reed Quintet, who are coming to Galway.

The Calefax Reed Quintet will hold a mini-residency in Galway, spending Monday and Tuesday working with schools in Galway city and county and the Galway Youth Orchestra.

Then on Wednesday at 8pm in NUI, Galway’s Aula Maxima, they will play for the public at a concert entitled Wind Wizards. On the night, the quintet - Oliver Boekhoorn (oboe ), Ivar Berix (clarinet ), Raaf Hekkema (saxophone ), Jelte Althuis (bass clarinet ), and Alban Wesly (bassoon ) - will play Richard Strauss’ ‘Till Uilenspiegel’, Enrique Granados’ ‘Goyescas’, Alexander Skriabin’s ‘Etudes’, Deirdre McKay’s ‘Purple Blue’ (written specially for Calefax ), and Conlon Nancarrow’s Study for Player Piano No 3c.

Tickets are €20/16/6 from Music for Galway (091-705962 or [email protected] ) or Opus II, St Augustine Street. The next event is the Emily Anderson Annual Memorial Concert on Friday February 20.
