FAR FROM Literature We Were Reared the annual hooley of prose, poetry, music, and craic by Galway writers and performers, returns to the Róisín Dubh this Sunday at 8pm.
Hosted by writer Conor Montague and singer-songwriter Seamus Ruttledge, Far From Literature is a counter-point to the solemnity of the modern literary reading, and has no intention of taking itself seriously.
Reading this year will be poet and Wilde family biographer Gerry Hanberry; poets Sarah Clancy, Elaine Feeney, Hugo Seale, Aideen Henry, who has just launched her second collection, Slow Bruise, Johnny Hannon, BF Warren, John Corless, Poland’s Bogusia Wardein, and Switzerland’s Esther Murbach.
Also reading will be Galway Advertiser arts editor Kernan Andrews; writer and columnist Charlie Adley; Hotpress journalist Olaf Tyaransen; Alan McMonagle, author of the short story collection Psychotic Episodes; and Irish Bitches Be Crazy author Emma Comerford. There will also be performances by actors Aindrias de Staic and Sarah O’Toole, as well as Bin Logan, and comedians Danny Dowling and John Donnellan. Glaswegian spoken word artist Stephen Watt will make his Galway debut. His acclaimed debut collection Spit explores the psyche, the mundane, and the fantastical, from a Scottish perspective.
Far From Literature has previously been part of the Cúirt festival programme but was not included this year, a fact that has inspired Liability – A Tragic Misinterpretation, a short drama to be performed by Conor Montague and John Donnellan which will open the night.
