Connacht’s American Football season kicks off on Sunday

Most of us have seen American Football on TV. Some like it, some don’t and others are intrigued, but just don’t understand it. But have you ever seen a game live? Believe it or not, Ireland has a fully up and running national league, and has had for some time.

In 2014, the third tier of the IAFL was born. It included four new teams - Tyrone Titans, Dundalk Mavericks, South Kildare Soldiers, and Connacht’s only team, the Galway Warriors.

On Sunday at 2pm in St Mary’s, the Warriors will take to the field in the first game of their second season against a familiar foe, The South Kildare Soldiers.

Club secretary Colin O’Halloran says both games against Kildare last season were tight and dramatic.

“|They were the type of game sportsmen and women want to play in. They beat us by two here, while a last minute interception touchdown won it for us up there. So we are very evenly matched.”
