Johnny Moynihan - in concert in Kinvara

JOHNNY MOYNIHAN, one of the legends of Irish folk music, will play a concert entitled Vocals and far too many instruments... in The GiG Room, Kinvara Community Centre, on Saturday April 4 at 8pm.

Vocalist, songwriter, and instrumentalist Johnny was a member of Sweeney’s Men with Andy Irvine and Terry Woods. The band’s two albums - Sweeney’s Men (1968 ) and The Tracks Of Sweeney (1969 ), revolutionised Irish folk, by combining native musical forms with British and American influences, and an awareness of the contemporary rock scene, paving the way for Planxty and De Dannan, with whom Johnny would later work.

Johnny also worked with and wrote songs for the great English folk singer Annie Briggs. He was member of the popular band the Fleadh Cowboys in the 1980s, while more recently he has been involved with the trio Moonshine.

Joining Johnny on the night will be singer, musician, and songwriter Brendan Hearty (Higglers Jug Band, Brendan Hearty Band ). Brendan has known Johnny since the 1970s. “I like Johnny because of his presence,” Brendan says. “He’s in the moment to the music, always there and aware of the people he is playing for. Johnny is a great musician. You won’t find him playing anything that remotely resembles a contrivance.”

Tickets are €12/10 and will be available at the door. The show is organised by Kinvara Area Music. See http://www.kinvaramusic.com.
