Cello, piano, and a bit of Beethoven

HUNGARIAN CELLIST István Várdai, whose playing The New York Times praised for its “fluidity and virtuosity” and “a fleet-fingered lightness and a rich timbre” is coming to Galway.

Várdai, with pianist and Music for Galway artistic director Finghin Collins, will play the HP Building, Ballybrit Business Park, on Tuesday March 24 at 8pm. The programme is Beethoven’s Sonata in A major Op 69; Brahms’ Sonata in E minor Op 38; De Falla’s Suite Populaire Espagnole; and Shostakovich’s Sonata Op 40.

Várdai has performed in New York, including Carnegie Hall, as well across Europe, and in Tokyo and Beijing. He has also recorded albums for Ysaye Records and the Hännsler label.

Finghin Collins has performed with the Chicago, Houston, City of Birmingham, and Bournemouth symphony orchestras, the Seoul, London, Rotterdam, BBC, and Royal Philharmonic orchestras.
