‘We all live in a yellow submarine’

Classical duo to perform Beatles’ classic this weekend

THE SUBMARINE exhibit at the Galway City Museum will be the setting for a performance of The Beatles’ famous ode to a yellow underwater craft, this Saturday at 11am.

The Brennan-Cahill Saxophone-Piano Duo will perform ‘Yellow Submarine’, described by Q magazine as “the greatest children’s song ever written”, as well as music by Belgian composer André Wagnein at the second concert in the 3 Saturdays: 3 Kinds of Music organised by The Galway Music Residency and the museum.

The performance will take place at the ‘steam punk’ submarine, a dark room full of glowing plankton to demonstrate how bioluminescence works, at the SeaScience Zone in the city museum.

Gavin Brennan and Aileen Cahill came together as a saxophone and piano duo in 2013, fuelled by the belief that the classical repertoire for sax and piano is underperformed They were awarded the Apprentice Ensemble residency with ConTempo for 2014-2015.

The concert will also see the ConTempo Quartet perform one of Mozart’s ‘Prussian Quartets’, while there will be Irish trad from harpist Róisín Donohoe. Admission is free and all ages are welcome.
