Tchaikovsky and Bluebeard @ The Eye

FIRST LOVE and erotic, violent, love are the stuff of the operas Iolanta and Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, which will be screened at The Eye for Valentine’s Day this Saturday.

A double-bill performance, starting at 5.30pm, the operas will be broadcast live via satellite, from The Metropolitan Opera, New York, to Galway.

Star Russian soprano Anna Nebtreko stars opposite Polish tenor Piotr Beczala in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta, the story of a beautiful blind girl experiencing love for the first time. The darker side of romance will be explored in Bartók’s erotic, psychological, thriller, Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, where newlywed Judith (Nadja Michael ) realises her husband Bluebeard (Mikhail Petrenko ) has several former wives and a deeply chilling past. Directed by Mariusz Trelinski, the shows will be performed in a 1940s noir film style. The orchestra will be led by Russian conductor Valery Gergiev.
