Saturday is classical music day

FEBRUARY’S REMAINING Saturdays will, through a new series of concerts, hear the variety of instruments and musical styles that make up the broad world of classical music.

3 Saturdays: 3 Kinds of Music is a joint venture by the Galway Music Residency and the Galway City Museum, with concerts taking place in the museum from 11am to 1pm, on February 14, 21, and 28.

The opening concert is this Saturday with flautist Iulian Pusca, winner of the Irish Freemason’s Young Musician of the Year 2012 and pianist Anastasia Lorianova, who will perform Bartok’s Romanian folk dances. They will be joined by ConTempo for a performance of ‘Hora Staccato’. There will also be Irish trad with violinist Claire Egan.

On Saturday 21, The Brennan-Cahill Saxophone-Piano Duo perform a programme including a piece by Wagnein and The Beatles ‘Yellow Submarine’. There will also be Irish song with harpist/singer Róisín Donohoe.

The final concert on February 28 will see oboist Conor Cavanagh and pianist Éadaoin Copeland, from the Royal Irish Academy of Music, performing works by Schumann, Saint Saens, and Britten. There will also be trad with Galway uillean piper Cormac Cannon.

Each concert will also feature ConTempo performing the three Mozart ‘Prussian Quartets’, a different one each Saturday.
