Soulful Slow Club for Strange Brew

SLOW CLUB have been called “Sheffield’s very own two person take on The Commitments” by the NME, and their soul-influenced sound is coming to Galway to play Strange Brew at the Róisín on Thursday February 19 at 9pm.

Slow Club - Rebecca Taylor and Charles Watson - are on tour to promote their most recent album Complete Surrender. The album, recorded with producer Colin Elliot, who has worked with Richard Hawley, sees Slow Club explore their love of Motown, Stax, Northern Soul, and Frankie Valli. The album has met with positive reviews and Taylor’s singing has been singled out for praise by Pitchfork: “Taylor is an absolute titan of a lead vocalist. Her voice is big, bright, and open, with a complete lack of pretension. She’s an expert at conveying a wide range of emotion, which renders her an instantly familiar presence.”

Taylor and Watson formed Slow Club in 2005, and spent the next two years touring the north of England, an eventual support slot with Tilly And The Wall bringing them to the attention of Moshi Moshi Records.

The label released their debut album Yeah So in 2009 which earned positive reviews for its mix of vocal harmonies, folk-pop, and rockabilly. In 2010 the band recorded second album Paradise, which Q described as the “sound of a band starting to spread its wings”. It also saw them move in a more soul orientated direction.

Tickets are available at www.roisindubh.net, the Ticket Desk at OMG Zhivago, Shop Street, and The Róisín Dubh.
