Galway WFC face Peamount on the double

Galway WFC return to Eamonn Deacy Park where they will host Peamount United on Sunday (2pm ) in the National League.

The game will also serve as a strong indication of their next meeting on Sunday week in the Continental Tyres WNL Cup semi-finals - the draw having been made recently.

Manager Don O’Riordan will be looking for some consistency in his side’s form. After putting in an excellent performance against Castlebar Celtic two weeks ago, last Sunday they dropped a level before going down 3-0 away to UCD Waves.

Both sides were made to wait an hour after the due kick-off time when referee Natasha Valentini deemed the pitch unplayable due to the instability of one set of goal posts in strong wind conditions.

However ground staff ensured the game could take place, and it was the hosts through Listowel native Savannah McCarthy who grabbed the lead after the hour half mark, driving a right foot shot into the top corner of Galway keeper Tina Hughes’ net.

Just before the break Galway had a shout for a penalty denied by the referee when Ruth Fahy was upended in the box following a GWFC corner.

Rosie Maguire doubled the advantage for Waves on the hour mark, before doubling her own tally for the afternoon six minutes later, chipping home the rebound after Hughes’ good save. Maguire nearly grabbed a hat-trick five minutes later after Julie Ann Russell cut the ball back, only for Maguire to blast over.
