DRUID THEATRE is internationally acclaimed for its stagings of classic Irish drama, but 2015 sees the companyturn its attention to England’s genius - William Shakespeare.
DruidShakespeare, following on from the hugely successful DruidSynge and DruidMurphy cycles, will see Druid tackle three of The Bard’s history plays - Richard II, Henry IV (Pts 1 & 2 ), and Henry V - which premiere in Galway in May.
Adapted by Mark O’Rowe, who scripted the film Intermission and the plays Terminus and Howie The Rookie, and directed by Garry Hynes, these plays will be presented in four marathon performances over the two weekends and four two-part performances on consecutive weekdays.
Speaking of the upcoming performances, Garry Hynes said: “The question we are asking is how, in the context of the historical relationship between Ireland and England, do we as Irish artists produce these plays today?”
