Galway WFC are back on the road again this weekend when they travel to the capital to take on UCD Waves.
UCD Waves, currently third in the table, were defeated 3-0 on Sunday by league leaders Wexford Youths, while Galway WFC were forced to settle for a point on their return to Continental Tyres WNL action on Saturday night in Castlebar.
Having led the game for long periods Galway were hit by a Celtic equaliser from an Aoife Herbert penalty in the 93rd minute.
It was tough luck for the Galway women who had taken the lead on 27 minutes when a Roisín Jacob through ball to Ruth Fahy rebounded off the advancing Castlebar keeper Aoife Brennan for Fahy to stroke home. Just before the break Emma Hansberry broke down the left for Castlebar before cutting inside to fire past Tina Hughes in the Galway goal to level.
Galway WFC begin to control second-half proceedings. Inside the opening minute Lynsey McKey forced a save from Brennan, while in the 50th and 52nd minutes Méabh De Búrca also forced Brennan into action from long-range shots.
Castlebar, however, always looked dangerous on the break and Galway were thankful to see Herbert’s 57th minute shot sail over.
The move of the game came on 69 minutes when McKey gathered the ball on the half way line, and played the ball into Galway striker Eleanor Stafford whose wonderful reverse pass found McKey on the run. One-on-one with the advancing Brennan, McKey dinked it over the diving keeper, and finished to an open net.
After a Sarah Baynes’ shot struck the crossbar on 83 minutes for Castlebar, Galway must have felt they had weathered the storm, but Celtic had one last chance with an injury-time penalty which they took to equalise.
