The Galway County Council has granted planning permission for an all-weather pitch facility in the grounds of St Paul’s Secondary School, Oughterard.
Once completed, the new pitch will cater for the students of both the secondary and national schools in Oughterard. It will also cater for sporting organisations and the general public in the catchment area from Maam Cross to Roscahill and Moycullen areas.
Independent Connemara councillor Thomas Welby has welcomed the news. The pitch committee was previously allocated a grant of €200,000 under the county council’s Recreational Capital Programme and Cllr Welby worked closely with the committee to secure the funding.
“I am delighted that this badly needed facility has moved a step closer to construction,” said Cllr Welby. “It will cater for in excess of 400 students in the immediate area, but it also has the potential to cater for the youth in the wider catchment area for both sport and other activities.”
