Palm D’Or winning Turkish film to be screened next week

WINTER SLEEP, the Turkish film The Guardian described as a “compelling drama” and a “powerful meditation on guilt”, will be shown in Galway this weekend.

Winter Sleep, which won the Palm D’Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, will be screened by the Galway Film Society in the Town Hall Theatre on Tuesday January 13 at 7.30pm.

Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan and inspired by the short stories of Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, the film centres on actor-turned-hotelier Aydin (Haluk Bilginer ) who, along with his wife and the locals of his town, are trapped by heavy winter snowfalls.

As the weather gets worse Aydin reveals a tyrannical side to his character, leading him to become an object of scorn to those around him. Can he save his reputation before he is buried in an avalanche of his own creation?

The film is a special screening ahead of the society’s winter/spring 2015 season which starts on Sunday January 18. For tickets contact the Town Hall on 091 - 569777 or see www.tht.ie
