Galway Golf Club in Salthill has been named the title Best Tournament Venue 2014 in Connacht.
The award, presented at the annual delegate meeting of the Connacht Branch of the GUI, was in recognition of the manner in which the club and course were prepared and presented for the 2014 Connacht Mid-Amateur Championship, which was held in October when Galway Golf Club member Eddie McCormack secured a two-shot victory over the field.
Club manager Dave Kelly and incoming captain Donal O’Sullivan, in receiving the award, paid tribute to the hard working and dedicated course staff who presented the players with a firm but fair test of golf over the two days of the competition.
Galway Golf Club, founded in 1895, will host the 2017 Irish Close Championship which has seen such winners down the years as Rory McIlroy (2005 and 2006 ), Graeme McDowell (2000 ), Peter Lawrie (1996 ), Padraig Harrington (1995 ), Darren Clarke (1990 ) and Paul McGinley (1989 ).
