Galway boxers were toasting success this week when they claimed four national intermediate titles.
Orla McInerney from Monivea Boxing Club claimed the first Irish title for Galway. From the minute the bell rang McInerney put pressure on her opponent Emma Agnew from Limerick, forcing her to a TKO in the third round in the 54kg women’s division.
In the 64kg division, Pat Mongan from Olympic BC endured a battle of the fittest against Colin Donovan from Cork and prevailed to claim the second title, while Corrib Boxing Club’s Noel McBride from Claregalway boxed clever against Sean Hunt of Dublin in the men’s 67kg division to claim the first Irish title for the club by unanimous decision.
Finally Loughrea’s Ryan Dervin met Donegal’s Paul Kelly in the 75kg division in a tight battle which came down to the last round. However Dervin was able to pick Kelly off at long range to claim the 75kg crown.
In the men’s 85kg final, Ciaran Griffin from Connemara was forced to settle for the runners-up spot, losing by a 2:1 spit decision against Jeffrey Kavanagh from Dublin.
