Galway people are well used to fashionistas decked out in the latest designer gear accessorised with fascinators and stilettos competing for the various best dressed competitions during Race Week.
Less well known however, is the Best Dressed Boat competition, where ladies of different tonnages will be adorned with lights and bunting over the Christmas period. The annual competition for the ‘Best Dressed Boat’ gets under way today and the competition period will last until January 6.
Boat owners of vessels docked in the Marina and visiting cargo ships have been asked by the Harbour master Captain Brian Sheridan to ensure their boat is ‘bedazzled and bejellewed’ and ‘looking her best’ over the Christmas season.
A number of marine related prizes including life jackets are on offer for the owners of the Best Dressed Boats who will be presented with their prize on Wednesday January 7.
Members of the pubic are encouraged to visit the Marina during the Christmas period which will be decked out with festive Christmas lights for the duration.
Speaking this week, Captain Brian Sheridan says he expected the marina to be at capacity levels over the holiday season.
“The harbour is very busy at present and we’ve also a number of visiting boats including the research vessel, the Celtic Explorer who will dock on the 17th December,” said Captain Sheridan.
“As a working commercial port, we will have cargo ships unloading and loading throughout the holiday season so it will be very much business as usual for us,” concluded Captain Sheridan.
