GMIT Students’ Union has announced the launch of its SU heroes campaign, centred on fundraising and the collection of new toys for underprivileged families and sick children in hospital around Christmas time. The toys will be distributed through the Society of St Vincent De Paul and will also be given to sick children in UHG over the Christmas period.
The campaign will run until December 18 with the students’ union encouraging students to run their own events and fundraisers. The campaign started on Tuesday with a bucket collection in Eyre Square, and events taking place this week include a sky dive, Christmas market, Christmas carols, and a children’s Christmas party today (Thursday ) featuring real reindeer and a visit from Santa.

“We are in a position where we represent over 7,000 students who can make a massive difference to the local community,” SU president Sam O’Neill said at the launch on Tuesday. “Getting people engaged with this campaign by turning it on them to be a hero and make a child’s Christmas has seen a massive amount of money raised and toys donated already.
“With the state the country is in at the moment and unemployment levels as high as they are, we all know somebody who will benefit massively from this campaign,” he added. “If anyone would like to get involved please hand in a donation of money or a toy to the GMIT SU office.”
