He warned however, that “against a backdrop of global financial and economic uncertainty, continued success must not be taken for granted”. He called on the government to continue to pursue efficiencies in the public sector in order to increase national competitiveness and for fairer access to finance. Alluding to the fact that the marginal tax rate for the self-employed is three per cent higher than the rest of society, he called for the introduction of measures that reward rather than penalise business success, to make Ireland “the best small country in the world in which to be an entrepreneur, an employer and an exporter”.

Alan Duffy, CEO and Head of Corporate Banking

HSBC Ireland, commented: “Exports occupy a dominant position in our economy and our own research shows that Irish exporters are looking increasingly confident in the short and medium term. In order to maximise opportunities in the longer term, innovation and diversification will be required, and that is why we are delighted to sponsor these awards, which reward such endeavours. I offer my congratulations to all our winners and our nominees, who are at the forefront of our uniquely open economy.”
