Citóg - a new home and three gigs a month from November

Original music night to begin new residency in Róisín Dubh

CITÓG, THE Galway music night which supports original emerging and alternative rock, pop, and folk artists, will this month hold begin a new series of tri-monthly gigs in its new home of the Róisín Dubh.

Citóg will hold three shows throughout November in the Dominick Street venue’s main stage area, with each night boasting stellar Galway and west of Ireland based talent. Headlining the first night on Wednesday November 5 is prog-folk sextet My Fellow Sponges.

The group first came to attention with the brilliantly kaleidoscopic video for ‘This Dream Song' in 2013, whetting the appetite for their debut album, Bonne Nuit, released later that year. In July, the band released the EP, Something Like Light, which the Galway Advertiser’s Charlie McBride said “demonstrates a a slightly more reflective side of the band, without losing their original folksy charm”.

Support is from the gifted folk singer-songwriter Eddie Keenan and alternative folk duo Rivers & Crows.

Steven Sharpe & The Broke Straight Boys, one of the most exciting acts to hit the Galway scene in recent times takes to the stage on Wednesday 12.

The bluesman in a sequinned dress, Steven’s music combines the hard-rocking blues and R&B stomp of bands like Led Zeppelin, with moments of delicate, dextrous, folk. Lyrically he explores modern gay life with insight, humour, and a flair for telling stories, as witnessed by the recent single 'Tipperary Song/Uganda'.

The Broke Straight Boys are David Shaughnessy (My Fellow Sponges ), Shane O'Malley (from Led Zeppelin cover band No Stairway ), and solo folk/blues musician Dylan Murphy. Support is from We Are Ruffians and Derek Ellard.

The final gig for November features Tuam trio Oh Boland, who marry energetic pop-punk with slice o’life lyrics. They are currently working on their debut album. Also on the bill are Westport surf-pop/garage band Me And My Dog, and alternative-rockers The Black Sea Fleet.

Doors are 8pm and admission is free. See www.facebook.com/citog Citóg takes place on the first three Wednesdays of every month. The fourth Wednesday will be hosted by the Little Cinema Galway.
