Eight cello extravaganza

AN EIGHT-cello extravaganza, featuring eight musicians playing music by eight different composers, takes place in An Taibhdhearc on Tuesday September 30 at 8pm.

The concert marks the start of Music for Galway’s Cellissimo season and the performers are all cellists: William Butt, professor of cello at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin; RIA’s Annette Cleary; 17-year-old Christopher Ellis; Galwegian Sarah Joyce; Aoife NicAthlaoich, who is equally at home handling jazz; American-born cellist and composer Adele O’Dwyer; Fulbright Scholarship recipient Gerald Peregrine; and ConTempo’s Adrian Mantu.

They will perform Villa-Lobos’ melancholy ‘Bachianas Brasileiras’; tangos by Piazzolla; Rossini’s William Tell Overture; JB Barriere’s Sonata in G for two cellos; Popper’s Suite for Two Cellos and Requiem, arranged for cello sextet; Schubert’s Marche Militaire, arranged for cello quartet; and Jane O’Leary’s Distant Voices.
