A Saw Doctor and a Waterboy - live in Clifden

THE SAW Doctors’ Leo Moran and Anthony Thistlethwaite - who is also a member of The Waterboys - will perform at a lunchtime event in The Alcock and Brown Hotel this Saturday, as part of the Clifden Arts Festival.

With The Saw Doctors still on sabbatical, Moran and Thistlethwaite have released a new acoustic album Pushin’ It!, the follow-up to their debut album as a duo, Flyin’ It! and audiences can expect to hear songs from both albums at the show, and perhaps a Saw Docs number as well. To get a taste of them in action, see this video shot in the Irish Heritage Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2013.

The event will see the duo joined by American novelist Suzanne Strempek Shea, who will read from her book, This Is Paradise. The booktells the moving story of how career guidance teacher Mags Riordan set up a medical clinic in Malawi in memory of her son Billy Riordan, who drowned while on holiday in Malawi in 1999. Now 10-years-old, the Billy Riordan Memorial Clinic is staffed by Irish and international medical and non-medical volunteers who are known as ‘The Billys’

Suzanne Strempek Shea is the author of five novels, including Hoopi Shoopi Donna, and a memoir, My Journey Through Breast Cancer and Radiation. She has featured twice on NBC Television’s Today, and in major US papers, The Washington Post and Boston Globe.

This Is Paradise will be launched in Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop, Galway city, this Friday (September 26 ) at 6.30pm. Proceeds from sales of the book will go towards the Billy Riordan Memorial Clinic.
