ASKING ‘WHAT is your favourite Weezer album?’ is like asking ‘What is the best Breeders album?’ Though both bands have released many, most fans prefer the first two.
Then the question becomes ‘Which of the first two is their best?’ There is no right answer, it is all a matter of taste but the Róisín Dubh will attempt to focus minds with its Weezer tribute event, Only In Dreams, The Blue Album vs Pinkerton, on Friday September 19 at 8pm.
On the night Limerick indie-rock band Windings, Galway garage-rock/pop band Dott, Tuam pop-punks Oh Boland, New Pope, and members of Boyfights with Galway comic-book artist Barry Richardson, will perform two tracks from each album.
For my money it has to be Weezer (aka ‘The Blue Album’ ), which on its release in 1994 was a landmark in indie-rock. With its irresistible pop hooks, thunderous riffs, indie-alternative sensibilities, and perfect distillation of teen angst and aspirations, it had enough top tunes, heavy guitars, and emotional depth to reach a wide audience.
That it could do so in the year of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain; Live Through This; Vauxhall and I; Parklife; and Definitely Maybe was further testament to its brilliance. Also significant were the inspired videos for ‘Undone (The Sweater Song )’ and the genius of ‘Buddy Holly’ which situated the band seamlessly within an episode of Happy Days.Tickets are available at www.roisindubh.net, the Ticket Desk at OMG Zhivago, Shop Street, and The Róisín Dubh.
