A lovely night for the songs of Mario Lanza

“MARIO LANZA’S passion and the way his voice sounds are what made me sing opera. I actually owe my love for opera to a kid from Philadelphia.”

So said no less a figure than Plácido Domingo about the Italian-American tenor and movie star (also an inspiration to José Carreras ), who will be celebrated in Galway this month at the show, The Loveliest Night of the Year.

The Loveliest Night of the Year - a Tribute to the great Mario Lanza takes place in the Black Box Theatre on Saturday September 27 at 8pm, with Galway tenor Seán Costello performing such Lanza classics as ‘Golden Days’, ‘Without a Song’, ‘Ave Maria’, ‘Be My Love’, ‘O Sole Mio’, and ‘Because You’re Mine’.

Joining Seán will be Vladimir Jablokov and the Slovak Festival Orchestra, tenor Frank Naughton and soprano Sandra Oman.

The show has been endorsed and praised by Lanza’s daughter Eliza Lanza who said it was the “best celebration concert to her father she had attended anywhere in the world”.

Tickets are available from the Town Hall Theatre through 091 - 569777 and www.tht.ie
