Pearse Stadium closes until spring

Pearse Stadium will remain closed for the remainder of the season for remedial drainage work and a pitch upgrade.

Galway CEO John Hynes says the stadium will be out of use until spring next year to “ensure the new playing surface has time to bed-down and settle and that pitch maintenance programmes are completed”.

As a result this year’s county football and hurling finals will be played elsewhere, at venues to be determined by the Galway competitions control committee.

Hynes says the work will result in significant improvements to the playing surface and the ground is expected to host a number of high profile inter-county games, including the division one hurling league games with Kilkenny and Clare, and a number of games in the National Football League next year.

In addition Pearse Stadium will host at least one Connacht Football Championship game in 2015, he says, and depending on the county team's progression, the 2015 Connacht Football Championship final could be played at the venue also.
