Galway celebrates longest running gay pride festival in Ireland

Galway is set to once again hold the Galway Community Pride Festival, which, in its 25th year, is the longest continuously running pride festival in the country.

The Galway Community Pride Festival, started in 1989 by Nuala Ward, is scheduled for Saturday August 23, and includes a march through Galway city centre.

Fine Gael councillor John Walsh praised the event organisers for “their message of equality and inclusiveness.” He said, “The past 25 yars have seen great progress in terms of people’s attitudes and opinions, both in our communities and at Government level. It’s a most welcome landmark that a referendum will take place next year to provide for same-sex marriage; which will be the next barrier to fall as we look to build an inclusive, equal society.”
