The HSE West is being urged to fasttrack the appointment of a play therapist at University Hospital Galway’s paediatric department.
The call comes from Independent city councillor Noel Larkin who says that the previous therapist left the position last year and a successor has not been appointed.
“Because of this the children’s playroom in the unit, which is adequately kitted out, has had to remain closed with the exception of some hours worked by volunteers.”
Cllr Larkin learned about the situation while canvassing for the local elections in April. Some of the volunteers are constituents in his area and he says they are “frustrated” with the situation.
“Some of the children in this department have serious illnesses and can be in the hospital for long periods of time. This playroom has been a welcome relief for the children, their parents and the staff. While the volunteers are supplying a limited service, they must be highly commended for their excellent care, which is unpaid and in their own time. Surely there should be funds to employ one full-time play-therapist.”
In a statement the HSE West stated that the play therapist position has been approved for filling and is being processed through the National Recruitment Service (NRS ).
“Galway University Hospital are actively pursuing this in order that the position is restored as soon as is practicable.”
Cllr Larkin hopes the situation is resolved promptly.
