Fringe festival exhibitions

THE GALWAY Fringe continues into this weekend so there is still time to check out a number of the visual arts exhibitions taking place as part of the festival.

Jim Kavanagh is undergoing his own particular, artistic equivalent, of the famous Star Trek slogan, ‘Boldly going where no man has gone before...’.

Kavanagh is exploring the outer limits of space - inspired by the images captured by the Hubble Space Telescope - in his new exhibition Exploring the Cosmos via the Sublime, which runs at The Niland Gallery from tomorrow until Sunday, as part of the Galway Fringe Festival. The exhibition will be launched with a reception tomorrow at 6.30pm.

Everything Is Awesome!!, a photography exhibition by Patrick Dinneen is on in the Oslo Bar, Salthill (running until Monday 28 ).

“In today’s world most people seem to be in a rush and taking a moment to see the beauty in everyday life seems to be a lost art,” the Cork born, Galway based, photographer explains. “In this exhibition I hope to re-kindle our appreciation of the world around us and remind us that everything is awesome!”

One of the most potentially fascinating exhibitions of the Fringe could well be the Carbon Assembly’s Paper Jam which runs at the Galway City Museum until Wednesday 30.

Carbon Assembly is a collective of Anthony McGrath, Elodie Rein, Joanna Kasinska, Marcel Badia, who, with COPE Galway, has developed this paper based exhibition. The works are the result of three months of workshops catered for people who are using COPE services. Throughout the workshops the participants experimented with diverse paper techniques and explored notions of body and place.

Paper Jam is a part of ‘Periodical Abode’, a longer term socially engaged art project that is concerned with ever-increasing situations of homelessness.
